The Difference Between Being Welcomed and Being Embraced

I’ve experienced versions of this feeling in other parts of the world, and each time it affects me in the same way. It’s difficult to describe because it goes beyond friendliness. Friendly people are everywhere. What feels rare is being embraced. It’s the experience of entering a place as an outsider and, for a brief period, feeling as though the distinction no longer matters. Someone makes room for you at the table. They share their stories. They ask about yours. They treat your presence as something welcomed rather than tolerated.
